The Grund 18" Brighton Bear is a great gift idea for anyone needing or wanting a teady bear. I haven't heard anything about how washing goes, but the huggableness of the bear is a 10.

It's super cuddly soft. White so it gets dirty, but you know that anyway. We've washed in the washing machine several times and after almost 4 years it's still holding up.

My daughter loves this bear so much we bought 2 more! Now we have 3. One of them is a world traveller my daughter has nicknamed "Dirty Teddy". Become a fan of Dirty Teddy on Facebook.

I bought this bear for my mom (70's) who did a stint in the hospital. It was really soft and cuddly. I have no idea how a child might view this product but I think soft and cuddly in your 50's is quite nice!
